Educational trails

As part of its efforts to preserve biodiversity, the Domaine de la Villime has undertaken the creation of educational trails to raise awareness of issues relating to remarkable habitats and the flora and fauna they contain.

With this in mind, a number of information and educational signs about these habitats have been erected along the estate’s designated footpaths.

Here we present the results of our work and share with you our joy at contributing to a preserved environment that is conducive to life.

Wetlands (marshes, wet meadows, lagoons, peat bogs) – ecosystems situated between land and water – constitute an exceptional natural heritage due to their biological richness and the natural functions they fulfill. Here at La Villime, 4 hectares of wetland have been left to develop naturally for over 200 years.

Several restoration projects have been carried out, particularly on the ponds, and several more are planned.

The presence of old trees, or ageing trees, and deadwood is essential to the balance of forests. Without them, forests are depleted, become vulnerable to extreme weather events and suffer significant losses in terms of biodiversity.

Their preservation is therefore a matter of course for the estate, which is home to several old chestnut, oak and poplar trees, as well as dead trees, both standing and lying on the ground.

Hedgerows are plant formations comprising various species of trees and shrubs, both native and wild. They are generally found along paths, meadows and fields. As ecosystems in their own right, they offer numerous ecological and landscape benefits.

As part of the Breizh bocage project, more than 3,000 trees and shrubs have been planted on the Villime estate, including wild cherry trees, oaks, maples and birches. Today, they are home to a rich and diverse range of wildlife.

We’ve set up a camera trap to capture moments of wildlife… take a look!
